Frequently Asked Questions

What is test and tag?

Test and tag is the safety process for the inspection of electrical tools, equipment, and appliances. Workplaces in Victoria must be able to demonstrate safe systems of work, including electrical safety. Testing and tagging is a vital part of your workplace risk management system.

What are the Australian Standards for test and tag?

Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760: 2010 is the relevant standard for the safety inspection and testing of electrical appliances. For the construction industry, AS/NZS 3012:2010 is the primary standard and should be read in conjunction with AS/NZS 3760:2010.

How often do I need to do testing and tagging?

The frequency of testing and tagging depends upon the environment, the greater the hazards or risk, the greater the frequency. Building construction sites follow a schedule of Temporary Boards with RCDs to be inspected monthly and trade tools every 3 months. Factories, workshops, and places of manufacturing are on a 6 monthly cycle which includes the inspection of tools, single and 3 phase equipment and RCDs. Offices are on a test schedule starting from 12 monthly up to 5 yearly.

What is an RCD?

RCD stands for Residual Current Device. It is a safety switch that instantly breaks an electric circuit to prevent harm.

What is the difference between an RCD and a Circuit Breaker?

An RCD is a safety switch designed to protect people from electrical accidents such as shock or electrocution. Circuit Breakers protect only the wiring of the electrical system from overloads.

Does my generator need an RCD?

According to ASNZ 3012:2010, portable generators and inverters must be fitted with RCDs to be compliant on construction sites.

Why are tags different colours?

Tag colours are based on a 3 monthly cycle and an easy way to remember the schedule is the acronym, RUGBY.

R - red

G - green

B - blue

Y - yellow

What does IP rating mean?

IP rating refers to the protection against contact with dust, dirt, sand and water. The IP rating is a double-digit number which represents weatherproofing. Orange 4 way RCD boxes have ratings of IP33 and higher which are appropriate for construction work sites.

What is the difference between electrocution and electric shock?

Electrocution is death by electricity. Shock is a painful effect caused by contact with energised electrical tools, equipment or devices.

Sudden electrical current flowing through the heart can cause immediate cardiac arrest. Age, sex and general health are all factors in surviving electrical injuries.

What is a SWMS?

SWMS stands for Safe Work Method Statement. It identifies work hazards and risks to health and safety. The SWMS describes how to implement controls to manage risks. Risk of shock and electrocution must be eliminated. TAITT is happy to provide a SWMS before starting a job.
